GPS and Digital Map
Courses.

Our courses are designed
to help you learn more about both GPS and digital maps so that you can
understand what they can do and use their features effectively to help you both
to be safe and to maximise your enjoyment of the great outdoors.
All our courses use computerised
presentations to get the theory across. Don't be worried about all the
jargon and technology; it will all be explained as we go along and you'll have
handouts to take home to refer to. Practical courses have sufficient laptops
with MemoryMap 3D digital maps available for small groups to work with. Each
participant will be loaned a gps unit for the duration of the
course. Although the practical courses will cover both Magellan & Gamin
systems, we will only have Magellan gps units for you to use on the day. If you
have your own gps whether Magellan or Garmin, do bring it with you, so you can
use the make and model you will be using in the future Outdoor exercises are
literally straight out of the door into beautiful parkland or open
countryside.
In 2004 we've got three courses in
the North and South of the Lake District National Park. There's a summary of
each below, but if you want detailed information click on the particular course
button.
Introducing GPS &
Digital Maps: A two hour evening introduction on just what
GPS and digital maps can do for you. The course is aimed both at those of
you who may be thinking of buying a GPS or digital map and at those who may
just be interested in the subject. You'll see just what these systems are
capable of. We will explain all the jargon, review the different types of
products available and consider some of the safety issues. By the end of
the evening you should be confident that you won't waste your money in buying a
product that doesn't suit your needs.
Getting Started with
GPS & Digital Maps: This one day course is an
easy-to-understand starter course on using GPS and digital maps. The day is
a mixture of classroom activity and practical exercises using GPS with
waypoints and routes downloaded from a digital map system. Basic GPS safety
issues will also be considered. You do not need to own a GPS yet.
Going Further with GPS
& Digital Maps: Our 'Going Further' course extends the
understanding and skills gained through the 'Getting Started' programme. The
course is also ideal for those who have already taught themselves the basics of
GPS. It will be a day of practical route planning & creation,
downloading and uploading between the GPS and a three-dimensional digital map
with the opportunity to walk some routes and practise the skills that have been
learnt. Advanced safety techniques will be considered and you'll also learn
how to use your GPS abroad with different map systems.
Geocaching: We will be discussing
geocaching on our courses, and will be setting up a multi-cache, initially
based around our main venue, in the northern lakes.
